Julie Saunders took the Foundation Course at Colchester School of Art, followed by a BA (Hons.) Degree in Fashion and Textiles at Kingston University. She now lives and works in the coastal village of Tollesbury, Essex.
This work shows her response, in paint and cut paper, to the local tidal creeks, fleets and saltmarsh where she walks, draws and paints throughout the year. The colours and shapes reflect her repeated painted observations of the same locations at all states of tide, in all seasons, and in all weathers.
Her work originates as watercolour sketches – quick studies of ephemeral shapes and colours – which in her studio evolve into the cut paper collages and acrylic paintings.
The paper she uses for her collages is a mixture of vintage pantone sheets and cartridge paper painted with gouache, while the dense flat colours in her acrylic paintings are achieved through a technique which involves masking up the canvas, then cutting through and painting the negative shapes, colour by colour.
